Letters of Ficino
Ficino´s letters (1433-1499) :6:

There are four species of divine fury, love is the most excellent of all.

"Marsilio Ficino and Juan Cavalcante to the poet Naldo Naldio greet each other.

Your exquisite letters have been sent to us at the same time that the Moon joined Mars in a straight line.

Who would have believed how much it allowed to guess from the very sky that they had to wander with a certain lunar instability and be full of the fury and hatred of Mars?

On the contrary, they are not at all. Naturally they move with a movement not inferior to that of the Moon, but they are made wonderfully more bearable by the sublime harmony between Uranium and Calliope. They do not shine by the sign of Mars, but by that of Venus. They do not boil with hatred, but with charity. In which we simply perceive that the poetic and the astronomical are true, that Mars is undoubtedly defeated and subdued by Venus. Also that the theological is true, that the divine fury, evidently so superior to the celestial movements, in no way submits to the stars, but governs them. As there are four species of divine fury -as our Plato likes well-: Love, Divination, Mystery and Poetry, Love is also attributed to Venus, Divination to Apollo, Mystery to Dionysus and poetry to the Muses.

The love itself divine, taken by which you write to us, is considered the most excellent of all for the reasons: one, without a doubt, since the other furers without the inspiration of Love never remain faithful nor are they compared to it question around which the spirit inflames with fury; but another, since love, when it turns the lover bitter, whenever it is directed to something higher, with the thought closer to God, unites with the other fury. For if we begin to praise your love fury for its dignity, we will need poetic fury. And since the Muses do not aspire to be with us, because we cannot praise with poetry, at least we try it with mutual love and we will always try. "

Ficino refers to divine fury with this, to a specific paragraph of Plato´s work (if I remember correctly from Phaedrus) very enigmatic and which has given much to talk about: Plato used the word "Enthusiasm" which is read in Greek " Enth Zeus iasmos "and which literally means" To be possessed by a God "...

Tobe possessed by a God huh? Interesting, whenever I feel love, I look back and think I was being stupid to be honest. With the exception of love for family. So probably thinking of lust vs love there.

About the wise and fortunate man

“I consider wise and fortunate that man who lives happily in the midst of calamities, because he only depends on God; whom fear does not weaken nor pain torments; to whom is not corrupted by desire, nor inflamed by passion. Among the sharpest thorns, he chooses the most beautiful and delicate flowers; inside the filth, extract pearls; go in the darkest night; loaded with shackles and bound with chains, he runs as if untied and free, until, at last, the Holy Spirit blows upon him. ”

His need to return to himself ...

"(...) The cosmos moves in the very life of eternity and its place is located in this same living eternity, therefore, it can neither remain motionless nor be destroyed, because it is wrapped and almost as constrained by this eternity that lives.
In turn, the cosmos provides life for all beings that inhabit it and is the place of all beings that are ruled under the sun. The movement of the cosmos is the consequence of a double activity: on the one hand, he himself is vivified from the outside for eternity, on the other, he vivifies in turn everything that is within him, diversifying everything according to established numbers and times and determined by the action of the sun and the movement of the stars, in regulated periods of time instituted by divine law. The terrestrial time is discerned by means of the quality of the air, by the alternation of warm and cold periods; celestial time, by the reversion of the stars to their own places during their periodic revolution.
The cosmos is the receptacle of time and it maintains life with its course and movement. The course of time is regulated according to a strict order and in this orderly course time produces renewal in the alternation of all things in the cosmos.
As all things are subject to these processes, there is nothing stable, nothing fixed or immobile between the things that are born, celestial or terrestrial, but only God; and rightly only he, because only God is in himself and by himself, all centered in himself, full and perfect, he is his firm stability, because what other impulse can move him from his place, if all things are in he and he alone is in all things ?, unless we dare to think that his movement occurs in eternity, but not even that, because eternity also remains immobile, since it returns to her and the movement of all begins the times.
God has always remained at rest and eternity, like him, remains eternally immobile, containing within him, even before he was born, this cosmos that we call correctly sensible. A cosmos made in the image of God, while imitating eternity. Therefore, time, although it is always in motion, has a peculiar faculty of stability that resides in its need to return to itself. (...) "Let no one enter here except a geometer."
And who is a geometer?

Since the phrase "Let no one enter here if you are not a geometer" was engraved on the frontispiece of the entrance to Plato´s Academy, located in the garden of Academos (Academo is a mythical Attic hero), opposite the temple of the Muses, we can safely assume that the art of Geometry is of "vital" importance for the knowledge of oneself, of the Self.
The word Geometry of Geo (Earth) and metry (measure) means "measure of Earth", and the point of view that interests us now is not its literal or physical conception, which is also included, but the much broader symbolic one. and universal, that is, the Earth as the plane or world where the energies or emanations that make up the manifestation of the Universal Principle (Kether) are materialized, Malkhuth, if we consider the Kabbalistic Tree of Life.
It must also be borne in mind that it is from this plane, together with the one that makes up the lower psyche, where man conditioned by his senses, emotions, feelings and the world in which he was born can start, to get to know in a way staggered "new Earths" in more subtle and even more real worlds, present in all the manifestation and in oneself.
What, then, can the "measure of Earth" mean?
The man who, as Genesis says, is "made in the image and likeness of God", unites and unites in himself Heaven and Earth, that is, the creational emanations, attributes of the Principle and its material concretion.
Knowing the "measure" of that Earth is, therefore, knowing the laws and patterns of the harmonies of these emanations that in their descent are produced by the different worlds (Beriyah, Yetsirah and Asiyah in the Kabbalah), and the proportions between beings and everything that constitutes each one of them, as well as the analogies that allow them to be recognized as the expression or image of a single Universal Principle or Being.
From this point of view we can say that the human being is Geometry, since he carries within himself all that possibility, that is to "measure" himself in relation to the cosmogonic model. But it is essential the will to awaken or become aware of it through the journey with the Thought that involves the initiation in the arts that make up Sacred Science, including Geometry, and that the gods pour out their Grace so that it is a reality that is, to embody it and thus be a "geometer" participating with the Universal Intelligence of the creative process, up to its material concretion, and of unity in its entirety.

And, if we look at the planets, which are condensations in the visible and formal plane of Ideas or force energies of invisible and informal worlds, we see that with their movements and relationships, these beings describe harmonious geometric shapes.

Agamben quotes Plato:

[Love] is a medium between ignorance and knowledge. The truth of the matter is this: no god is a philosopher or seeker after wisdom, for he is wise already; nor does any man who is wise seek after wisdom. For herein is the evil of ignorance, that he who is neither good nor wise is nevertheless satisfied with himself: he has no desire for that of which he feels no want.’
‘But who then, Diotima, are the lovers of wisdom, if they are neither the wise nor the foolish?’
‘A child may answer that question,’ she replied, ‘ they are those who are in a mean between the two; Love is one of them. For wisdom is a most beautiful thing and Love is of the beautiful; and, therefore, Love is also a philosopher or lover of wisdom, and being a lover of wisdom is in a mean between the wise and the ignorant.

"We have spoken in the reflections on natural magic of how all the bonds can be redirected to the bond of love, or depend on it or consist directly of it. To anyone who uses the argument of the thirty species of knot it will be clear that the love is the foundation of all passions: those who love nothing, in fact, have no reason to fear, wait, praise, pride themselves, dare, despise, accuse, excuse, humiliate, compete, get angry, and be disturbed, ultimately, in ways analogous to those. "- So love is a disease?

- No, but it lacks little, because it is equivalent to the fevers quartens. Love is worse than an acute fever, there is no time when you do not sweat because of it. For love it is often necessary to sweat and cool, tremble and shudder, sigh and yawn, lose thirst and appetite and shake and restless, change color and pale, moan, lament, undress and torment, and sob, sleep and cry. This is often done when you feel and love well. Such is love and its nature. "

"This binsica, mors osculi or morte di bacio that Pico describes to us on four columns is a bodily extinction accompanied by an intellectual ecstasy. No one can rise to intelligible life without having previously renounced sensible life. But when the soul has abandoned the body´s remains, she will be called to a new form of existence, by spiritual regeneration, like Alceste who, as he accepted to die for love, was able to rise again by the will of the gods. Using the Christian and Kabbalistic interpretation of Shir ha- Shirim, Pico affirms that the lover is the symbol of the soul, the beloved is intelligence and his kiss, ecstatic union. The oral kiss, bacio, is, among the options of bodily love, the last and the most advanced that appears as a symbol of ecstatic love, Binsica or morte di bacio means the intellectual raptus during which the soul unites itself so strongly with the things from which it has been separated that, leaving the body, it abandons it completely. mind.

"Psyche revived by the kiss of Love" (1793), by Antonio Canova.

"This sculptural group, found in the Louvre Museum in Paris, made in marble by the Italian Antonio Canova in 1793, captures a moment in history between Eros and Psyche, narrated by Apuleius in his "Golden Ass", also known as "Metamorphosis". As explained here, Psyche was the most beautiful of three sisters, daughters of an Anatolian king. Such was her beauty that the people had abandoned the worship of Aphrodite to offer it to Psyche, a fact that caused the wrath of the goddess, who decided to remedy it, taking revenge on the young woman. To do this, she asked her son Eros (Cupid) to launch one of her arrows so that she fell in love, as punishment, with the most abject and mean man that existed. However, Eros falls surrendered to her charms and falls in love with her, so that he throws the arrow into the sea. Carried away by Zephyr, she discovers the wonderful palace of Eros, of a superhuman beauty, and the force of her desire to know leads her to cross the threshold. The winged god makes her his wife and, from that moment on, in order not to be discovered by Aphrodite, they meet daily only at night, and Eros never shows himself to his eyes, warning him that, if he violates his wish not to be identified, he would be committing sacrilege.
However, Psyche´s curiosity, stoked by her malicious sisters, leads her to want to discover the identity of her beloved by illuminating her face with an oil lamp that also burns her shoulder. Eros, who was asleep, wakes up with a start and, disappointed, abandons his wife.
From here, Psyche goes through a series of vicissitudes looking for Eros, until with the intercession of Hermes, messenger of the gods, she accesses Aphrodite herself, who makes her go through four tests, which she overcomes thanks to the help of various divine entities. The last one, with which Aphrodite hopes to get rid of the young woman definitively, consists of going down to the kingdom of Hades to fill a box with the beauty of Persephone, queen of the Underworld. Victorious from this test, she again lets herself be carried away by her curiosity and opens the box to take a little of that beauty for herself; however, he finds nothing more than a vapor that adds souls to Hades in amnesia, and that makes her fall into a deep sleep. At that moment Eros arrives, already recovered from his wound and, having forgiven her, kisses her and saves the dream again in the box to deliver it to his mother. This moment is the one that so delicately captures Canova´s work.
Finally, the enamored Eros achieves with her pleas that her father, Zeus, king of the gods, help her in her cause. To please his dear son, he orders Hermes to kidnap Psyche and take her to Olympus, where he grants her immortality. The nuptials are celebrated, and the wonderful banquet is attended by all the gods, including Aphrodite, who dances, now without rancor, in honor of the couple, to the sound of music played by an orchestra organized by herself.
Like all mythological stories, it is an archetypal narrative, in which Psyche corresponds to the human soul, who travels a tortuous, complicated and difficult initiation path until reaching her destination, next to the Spirit. Federico González explains the following regarding the concept of "psyche" in his "Dictionary of Symbols and Mysterious Topics":
"In the Kabbalah it is identified with the intermediate plane, which is located between the body (Asiyah) and the spirit (Atsiluth) and therefore with the six sefiroth" of construction ". This soul plane in the Kabbalistic Tree of Life is subdivided in turn into two, which are separated and united by the "surface of the waters"; Yetsirah (World or Plane of Formations), the lower psyche, associated with the body and therefore represents the Lower Waters and the other called Beriyah (World or Plane of Creation), the higher psyche, more linked to the spirit and therefore makes up the Upper Waters. It is in these two psychic worlds that all hermetic work is carried out, they are the ones that we must transfer so that finally the soul can merge with the spirit, its true destiny. ”

Psyche, in pursuit of Love, understood as the desire to know (which he demonstrates with that curiosity that makes him advance again and again on his way), and which is comparable to the outburst of love, begins his journey. Guided by Aphrodite, she arrives in the Underworld, where she undergoes a transmutation, essential to forget who she is (the dream in which Psyche is immersed after inhaling the steam of Hades) and to be able to access the Superior States. Rescued by Love ("he who awakens the sleeping things, and the dark ones illuminate; he gives life to the dead things and forms the non-formed ones; and brings perfection to the imperfect ones", as Marsilio Ficino tells us in his "De amore" finally accedes to immortality.

There are many works that represent the loves of Eros and Psyche, but among them I have chosen this one by Canova because it captures, wonderfully, that precise moment in which the young woman (the soul of the initiate) awakens to true Knowledge, having passed through all stages previous. And she achieves it thanks to her desire to Know, to that fire that pushes her to contravene all the warnings of those around her, and that Eros embodies, whom she tries to reach throughout her journey. Here, finally, Amor rescues her in his arms with infinite delicacy, after which they will be united forever in Immortality. As Leonardo da Vinci says: “Love is the child of Knowledge. Love is all the higher as Knowledge is truer. "
