Learning astrology and hoping to share experiences
Astrology has been very interesting to me lately. I love the symbolism and how it can be used to describe our psychology and the events around us. I feel like I have the basics of Hellenistic astrology down but I need a lot of practice to really test out astrology in general for myself. I hope to learn Vedic astrology next so I can compare the two better and see what works better for me.

So if any of you have any suggestions for learning Vedic astrology feel free to share them. I also hope to learn from all of your experiences using astrology. Has astrology been useful for you?

I’m looking forward to learning from all of you.

Hi! I can´t help with Vedic but wishing you all the best.
Regarding the usefulness of astrology... I found some patterns in natal charts which were bang on but I´m unsure if I just associated enough to find a supposed connection.
I mostly handle it as one would handle antic myths: a huge and interesting piece of history showing how the antics viewed the world.

I like that view of astrology. When I was reading meditations by Marcus Aurelius and writings from Greek philosophers they would talk a lot about ones nature and fate. I would always wonder how one would know their own nature. It wasn´t until I learned how important astrology was to their culture that their writings made more sense.

I think we incorrectly judge the people of old times as simplistic or superstituous because when we read about their belief systems we judge it based on our worldview. If we turn our concepts and prejudices off and just imagine the world as they saw it, that´s a miraculous adventure.

I’ve been reading this book and it’s said that in ancient India they would honour all energies, “the fiercer the deity, the more blessings it can give if we invoke its inner nature”. It used to be tradition to name the new born after the Janma, the name of the deity moon nakshatra is from the birth chart.

some of the more difficult moon nakshatras where the names of the deities weren’t taken over time. and probably because "fear" is so inflated in the modern world.

and hello Hermetic Dreamer, I hope you enjoy the forum!

My fundamental training and occupation is as a psychotherapist. Trained in Humanistic and Transpersonal psychotherapy.

While working with people I became very curious and suspected, that progress could be facilitated, if I had greater insight into what was going on in the depth of people´s consciousness.

I imagine you´d agree with me, that astrological symbols and their interrelationship can be used to describe the issues, challenges and even potential solutions for addressing people´s ´life battles´.

To accomplish that, I need to invest a significant amount of time and effort to understand their chart. I also need time in intimate contact with a person to understand what they realised of the potential described in their chart.

Yes that tradition may still be in use,a child is named after the janma nakshatra, the nakshatra where the moon is placed at birth.
Each nakshatra has a plethora of information which includes vowels/letters which correspond with it,so if a child is born in Virgo moon in the nakshatra of Uttara phalguni the first name should be with tay/to/Pa/Po etc.. sounding names.
It´s another reason why the moon is so exceedingly important in Jyotish 🙏🕉

Thanks!

I think that tradition of naming children after the nakshatra is pretty cool. I like names that match up with the character of a person. I accidently may have done that while naming my daughter Freya who is a Libra ascendant. She is still a baby so well shall see.

It is a shame how difficult planets, signs and nakshatras can be feared and treated differently. I´m beginning to learn each astrological symbol has good and bad expressions so each should be treated with the same respect.

I do agree with you 1janos, astrological symbols can be very useful in psychotherapy, especially for those whose minds are wired that way. I think Humanistic and Transpersonal psychotherapy looks very interesting from what little I know about it. Do you use a patients natal chart often? How useful is it when you do?

Thanks for the insight! I still need to learn more about my moon according to Jyotish astrology and the nakshatras as well. I´ve heard a lot of good things when people start using them in their practice.

You´re welcome!
Jamna means birth,so Jamna rasi means birth sign, the sign in which the moon was placed at birth. Janma nakshatra means the nakshatra the moon was placed at birth.

When I go to traditional Indian temples and do puja, the priest will ask me my name, my moon sign,my moon nakshatra and the spiritual lineage I was born in or initiated to before he starts the worship.
When I asked my mentor why do they do that he said by including all this in the worship, it´s like sending a letter with the proper name, address, apartment number,5 digit zip code to God!!! If you dont include the correct information, the letter will take longer to get there!!!

This is also another reason of the moon ´s great importance in Jyotish, it´s even connected to Temple worship too.

yes! this is what the author book Im reading explained. During the Yagya, is a prayer ceremony or visit to the temple where person gives his/hers Jamna to the priest. This is to form connection to Deity of the moon Nakshatra and receive its blessings.

(hope I understood correct ☺️..

Freya is a beautiful name :)

it’s a good approach to have, seeing the duality. Both good and bad, but I think it goes a lot deeper in combination of planets in signs. Some are more friendly together vs others have more friction depending on the flow of energies in the chart.

I believe in Vedic, there are various symbols representing the Nakshatras and they are "key" to understanding them.

You asked about learning Vedic, there’s quite a few good youtube channels if you want to take this route, it could be a good way to start as information is free. I like KRS but there are other good ones, too.

Yes and the connection to the Supreme Eternal Almighty, these have been done for thousands and thousands of years (some even say much much longer than that!!) in Yagya, Homa,Puja etc...This is why it´s recommended that someone goin thru a soul battering hellish period of life have Homa done for themselves as an Upaya.
Actually it´s almost considered a must to do Homa on your birth star(the day near your birthday when the moon is in the same sign/nakshatra as it was at birth) for overall health, vitality and longevity every year.
Also when Jupiter changes sign its also good to do Homa especially when he transits the 1st,3rd,4th,6th,8th,10th and 12fl from the Jamna Rasi.
This goes for unfavourable Saturn transits every 2.5 years when he changes signs (the temples are usually very crowded on this day!!)too and when someone has entered an inauspicious Dasa/bhukti/antardasa,so sometimes Homa is done 2 or 3 times a year......

Well, most people lack a great deal of self-awareness, so to speed up the process of personal growth I tend to have a thorough look into natal, midpoint and transit charts, especially with those who give me their permission and are taking the process of therapy seriously.

I imagine you also agree with the notion, that information to be gained from various charts only describes people´s potential and it takes a lot of effort to realize those. Little happens by itself and personal investment of time and energy is called for.

In my experience processes and timing of major transformation are predictable, especially using the combination of the three previously mentioned methods.

I just recently watched the some of the Navamsa videos in the KRS channel on youtube. I´ve heard of the D9 chart and wanted to learn more about it. When I concentrated on where the planets where in my chart I was blown away.

Your posts have given me a lot to think about. I´ve been realizing that I need to start a spiritual practice. Jyotish seems to be connected to many rich spiritual practices, I´ll have to look into this more. Thanks again for sharing.

That sounds like a great approach. I know I lacked self-awareness to certain aspects to my personality and the natal chart has been like a cheat sheet to learn myself better.

I´ve been learning about transits but I feel like need a lot more time before I feel confident using them. I still need to learn more about midpoints, too.
