How do you view the different zodiacs?
So this post is probably more philosophical than technical but I just recently learned about the draconic zodiac and have become interested in the philosophy behind the draconic, tropical and sidereal zodiac. Each of these zodiacs have been useful and resonated with enough people that they keep using them, which makes them relevant as far as astrology goes. This said, as I’m learning astrology I would like to keep in mind the perspective each zodiac gives so as not to mix them up too much as I learn. Keep in mind I’m just a beginner so feel free to correct me on any points that you are knowledgeable on and feel free to point me to resources that can give clarity on this subject.

The tropical or western zodiac is based on the vernal equinox and sets 0 degrees Aries here and so divides the zodiac up based on the relationship between seasons and the sun, a sun centered zodiac.

The draconic zodiac takes the north node and sets it at 0 degrees Aries and divides up the zodiac from that point. This is a very personal, moon centered zodiac and is said to be your soul’s chart, or past life chart.

The sidereal zodiac, which Vedic and Jyotish astrology uses, sets 0 degrees of Aries off of a specific point in the constellations, as far as I understand it, this relationship is based on a point on the earth and the stars themselves.

If you look at how the sun, moon and stars are used in astrology you can derive a philosophical lens for each zodiac. The sun representing will, identity, and consciousness makes the tropical zodiac an ego centric point of view. The moon representing emotions, past, habits, mind and body makes the draconic zodiac centered around perhaps an unconscious perspective based on the past and your body’s responses to the environment.

On first glance, it would seem like the sidereal zodiac gives us an outside/environmental perspective, a objective view of a chart or someone’s life, since the stars do not represent us personally like the planets do. It would seem to be, maybe, a star centric point of view, but I’m trying to wrap my head around what that even means.

Have any of you thought about this? Do you agree with my assessment of the tropical or draconic zodiacs? Those familiar with the sidereal zodiac, what perspective or lens do you feel is portrayed in a sidereal natal chart?

An update to what I have been learning.

I found a good article on a comparison of the zodiacs more focused on the sidereal. I found it pretty useful. It lines up with what I´ve seen with the tropical zodiac being more personal to our experience on earth and the sidereal having a more distance significance. It ends on an interesting note of how the sidereal might be more important as soon as we start traveling through the stars.

It looks like the nakshatras are based of the Moon´s journey through the ecliptic and so all nakshatra based techniques are very Moon focused. So it would seem that the sidereal zodiac focused on the nakshatras gives you an instinctual, reactive, emotional, and physical perspective in astrology. Something to test out anyway.

Thanks!

The dodecatemory chart is another chart I need to learn about more, thanks for bringing that one up. Vedic astrology also has alternative charts based on certain calculations, the Navamsa or D9 chart is one of the more widely used one, another chart I want to know better. The Navamsa is supposed to be very important especially later in life. This goes to show that astrology offers far more than just three lenses to look at a person.

Looking at my draconic chart brought some insight to some of the experiences I´ve had. I´m still trying to unpack this aspect of myself and understand draconic astrology more.

You know, recently I have thought much about how the tropical, Draconic *and* dodecatemory chart (I use the tropical zodiac here) all likely describe us, but from different views. Personally I´m not sure if I really feel the Vedic zodiac describe people so accurately - but yes, it might just be a bit of a different ´angle´, and thus perhaps it´s not as simple as thinking in the same ways you are used to and just changing the signs.

Duads, dodekatemoria or 12th-parts are new to me at this time in point... But I can guarantee you that Draco charts hold true! I´ve read about them telling about the incarnation of the soul, or signifying who we are deep, deep inside. I have seen more, um, ´practical´ manifestations of them too.

So... For the moment I cannot comment much but am instead following the thread, more passively. And a great thread at that!⭐
